Overview

Automatic version string management for your project builds.

Version Forge

Version Forge is an Unreal Engine plugin that builds your game's version string for every build. Choose from preset formats (SemVer, CalVer, Sequential) or define your own. Every build gets a unique version like 1.5.7+Windows.Shipping.20261123.418.

You bump the Major, Minor, and Patch versions when needed. The plugin captures the rest from your build: platform, configuration, build date, CI build number, and changelist.

Anatomy of a version string made up of the Project Version, an optional pre-release label, platform, configuration, build date, and CI build number.

You can replace the Patch value with the CI build or changelist number rather than update it manually. For example, set the Patch Source to Build Number and {patch} becomes the build number, so every build automatically gets a new version such as 1.5.418. See Patch source.

Key capabilities

  • A per-build version string. Accessible from both Blueprints and C++.
  • A drop-in widget. Easily display the current version string in your UMG layouts.
  • Presets for common version formats. SemVer, CalVer, sequential build counter, or a custom template.
  • CI-aware builds. Build numbers detected from common CI/CD tools like Jenkins, TeamCity, GitHub Actions, and more. Or via custom arguments.
  • Changelist support. Changelist details pulled from Perforce, Unity Version Control (Plastic SCM), and git.
  • Build artifact generation. A version file can be packaged with every CI build.
  • iOS and Android sync. Edit one Project Version and keep both platform version fields synced, and set the store build numbers.
  • Network versions. Set exactly what version string Unreal compares when a client joins a server.

Compatibility

  • Supports Unreal Engine 5.6, 5.7, and 5.8.
  • Works with any Unreal project, including Blueprint-only projects.
  • Works best when building from CI/CD systems, but can be scripted to work with local builds.
  • Tested on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android, but should work with any platform.
